Togo: President Abdourahamane Tiani expected in Lomé on this Friday

The President of the Transition in Niger,  President Abdourahamane Tiani, is set to arrive in Lomé for an official working visit and friendship meeting with his Togolese counterpart, Faure Gnassingbe, on Friday, 8 December , 2023. The visit comes following the cancellation of Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé’s planned visit to Niamey, the reasons for which remain undisclosed.

President Abdourahamane  Tiani, who also heads the CNSP (National Council for the Safeguard of the People), left Niamey for Lomé today, as confirmed by an official statement released on Friday.

The purpose of the visit is to strengthen diplomatic ties and engage in discussions on matters of mutual interest between the two West African nations.

Notably, this visit follows the recent rejection by the ECOWAS Court of Justice of Niger’s plea to lift sanctions imposed by the regional body in the aftermath of the July coup.

The Togolese government has been open to dialogue with Nigerien authorities and has uniquely accepted the UN’s proposal to establish a humanitarian corridor to Niger, alleviating the impact of regional sanctions on the population.

Furthermore, Togo has offered to mediate diplomatic solutions to the ongoing crisis in Niger, showcasing its commitment to finding peaceful resolutions within the ECOWAS framework.

The visit holds significance in the context of regional diplomatic efforts to address the challenges faced by Niger following the political developments in July.
