Burkina Faso: Captain Ibrahim Traoré formalises constitutional amendment in line with national realities

As promised, the Head of State of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has endorsed the law amending the Constitution, previously adopted by an overwhelming majority of 90% of lawmakers. According to a presidential decree signed on January 22, 2024, «The constitutional law No. 045-2023/ALT of December 30, 2023, amending the Constitution, is promulgated», reports the Burkina Faso News Agency (AIB).

Adopted on December 30 by the Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT), this law introduces significant changes to the Burkinabe Constitution.

Among the key innovations is the formalization of national languages, with French being downgraded from the status of an official language to that of a working language, alongside English.

The creation of the National Council of Communities and the abolition of the Economic and Social Council (CES), the Ombudsman of Faso, and the High Court of Justice also represent substantial reforms.

These constitutional adjustments are part of an initiative aimed at better reflecting the socio-cultural and linguistic realities of Burkina Faso.

The promulgation of this law thus marks a significant commitment by the government led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré to governance that is adapted to national specificities while modernizing institutions to meet the evolving needs of society.
