Burkina Faso: The Minister in charge of culture, Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, visited the headquarters of FESPACO

In the land of Honest Men, the Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, visited the FESPACO site located in the Gounghin district of Ouagadougou on Thursday, December 29, 2022. The member of the government, in charge of culture, came to inquire on the spot about the state of the equipment before exchanging with FESPACO agents on their working conditions.

After the visit, for more than an hour, there was a closed session between the officers and their responsible minister.

At the end of the meeting, Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo justified his approach by the fact that the 28th edition of FESPACO is fast approaching.

“We felt it was important to take stock of the state of preparations with all stakeholders. We come out of this working session reassured about the dynamics of the preparation of this festival,” he said.

Also, FESPACO agents took the opportunity to submit grievances to the Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo.

With regard to these grievances, the Minister recalled that we must not forget the current context prevailing in Burkina Faso. This is why it is important that the FESPACO organizing committee works not to exceed the budget allocated by the State, he believes.

Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo also advised to be as rational as possible in the organization of the festival and asked the staff to take initiatives to have other accompaniment from the partners.

The goal is that “any franc that is going to be spent can be useful and that there are not unnecessary expenses …”, stressed the minister.

“It’s a luxury you can’t afford in this context. We must have a festival that remains in the tenable proportions related to the conditions in which the country is held, “he continued.

The general delegate of FESPACO, Alex Moussa Sawadogo, said that the preparations are at 60%. “This means that films are selected and many partners have already positively confirmed their support. And the extra activities that we organize within the framework of FESPACO are ready. There are just a few points to tie up,” he reassured.

The 28th edition of FESPACO will take place from 25 February to 4 March 2023 under the theme “African Cinema and Culture of Peace”.
