Togo: National Assembly begins consultation on revision of amended constitution

The Togolese National Assembly commences a nationwide consultation this April 8, 2024, to review the constitution revised last month. This initiative seeks to gather feedback and inputs from diverse stakeholders, with a focus on engaging traditional leaders and organized groups.

Named the «Constitution Revision Information and Listening Tour», this consultation spans three days and involves three teams of deputies.

Its primary aim is to introduce the new constitution of the 5th Republic, ratified in March, to the public while encouraging citizens to provide suggestions for enhancing the text.

Approximately thirty localities are scheduled to be visited from April 8 to 10, as outlined in the National Assembly’s agenda.

This effort aligns with President Faure Gnassingbé’s call for constitutional revision through the National Assembly, emphasizing the importance of gathering opinions from various stakeholders to enrich the adopted text.

It’s essential to note that the new law, enacted amid controversy, establishes a parliamentary system in Togo.

It eliminates direct suffrage for electing the President of the Republic and establishes the position of Prime Minister, responsible for executive authority, with the President assuming a ceremonial role.
