Niger/Algeria: The migration issue could further damage diplomatic relations between the two countries

Diplomatic tensions between Niger and Algeria appear to be escalating following Niger’s rejection of Algerian mediation in resolving the socio-political crisis sparked by the events of July 26, 2023. This rejection, coupled with concerns over migrant treatment, has raised questions about the future of bilateral relations.

Nigerien authorities, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, voiced strong dissatisfaction on April 3rd regarding the treatment of Nigerien migrants during repatriation and deportation operations conducted by Algerian authorities.

The summoning of the Algerian ambassador underscored the gravity of these concerns, emphasizing the need for humane and respectful treatment of Nigerien nationals and their property.

In response, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Nigerien diplomat to reaffirm bilateral cooperation on migration issues.

Both sides acknowledged the existing framework for addressing migration challenges and emphasized the importance of maintaining constructive dialogue within this framework.

However, allegations of violent tactics by Algerian security services against migrants, along with reports of irregular migrants from other nationalities being redirected to Niger, have added complexity to the situation.

The involvement of international organizations like the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reflects the broader implications of these issues beyond bilateral relations.

As these developments unfold, the diplomatic landscape between Niger and Algeria remains uncertain.

Finding a mutually acceptable resolution that upholds human rights and international norms will be essential to easing tensions and preserving cooperation between the two countries.
