George Finidi named new Head Coach of Nigeria’s National Football Team

In an official announcement, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed the appointment of George Finidi as the new head coach of the national men’s football team, the Super Eagles. This decision follows the approval of the NFF’s technical and development committee’s recommendation.

Finidi George, a former elite winger, takes over from José Peseiro, who departed after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

George had been serving as interim coach and led the team in friendly matches in March, securing a victory against Ghana (2-1) and facing a 0-2 defeat against Mali.

As a former Nigerian international player, George’s immediate task will be to guide the Super Eagles through crucial qualification matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June 2024.

«The immediate task for George is to lead the Super Eagles to victory in two FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification matches against South Africa and the Republic of Benin, scheduled in Uyo and Abidjan, respectively, in just over five weeks», stated the NFF.

George’s appointment underscores the federation’s commitment to achieving success in international football competitions and represents a new chapter in Nigeria’s football journey under his leadership.
