Burkina Faso Transition: National Assembly calls for dialogue on Future direction

The upcoming deadline for the transition of  Burkina Faso, set by the October 14, 2022 charter, is approaching on July 1, 2024. Legally, a new timeline is needed for the transition government to continue its efforts in combating terrorism and reclaiming territory.

To address this, the Transitional Legislative Assembly of Burkina Faso (ALT) convened in a plenary session on Friday, April 26, 2024, to deliberate on the matter.

During the session, it was unanimously decided to organize national conferences to chart the course for post-transition directions.

According to provisions in the transition charter, specifically Article 19, the initiative for revising the charter «belongs concurrently to the transition president and one-third of the members of the Transitional Legislative Assembly», the legislative body during the transition period.

Following positive feedback from various parliamentary committees consulted for advice, general debate, and observations, all 71 voting deputies agreed to convene the national conferences.

The ALT clarifies that this legislative proposal does not directly revise the charter but rather seeks approval for convening the national conferences.

Dr. Ousmane Bougouma, President of the ALT, explained, «The national conferences will deliberate on the path forward after the transition. Through this legislative proposal, the TLA firmly expresses its commitment to broad consultation on the nation’s future».

It’s worth noting that the deputies’ initiative reflects the importance of allowing the people to decide on the transition’s next steps, while acknowledging the ongoing mission’s achievements, especially in the fight against terrorism.

Providing a new timeline for the transition is crucial for the country’s stability and progress, considering the continuous positive results in the anti-terrorism efforts.
