Covid-19: China faces an upsurge in contamination cases

China is currently facing a resurgence of covid-19-related outbreaks. The disease first appeared in the Chinese city of Wuhan in 2019 before spreading on a global scale. To contain the spread of the disease, the Chinese authorities had put in place a number of drastic restrictions. These measures were later copied around the world.

These measures were still in force in China until recently, when the authorities decided to lift them. From then on, there was an upsurge in cases of contamination and very quickly, the Chinese hospital system was overwhelmed. There was an influx of patients to the hospitals.

Many deaths were recorded with a high rate of elderly people. Faced with the health situation in the Middle Kingdom, the World Health Organization and various Western chancelleries have asked China to share reliable information about the new variant of covid-19 that is rampant in China.

European countries have even offered China a certain amount of vaccine to fight the spread of the pandemic. The WHO frequently expresses itself on the evolution of the disease in China and some statements of the organization are not to the liking of the Chinese authorities.

This Thursday, January 05, China reminded the UN organization on the need to adopt a fair position on the health situation in the country. “We hope the WHO will take a position based on science, objective and impartial and play an active role in the global response to the challenges of the epidemic,” said a representative of the Chinese diplomacy.

Several neighborhoods in China have been confined and a large majority of school districts have switched to online classes. The whole country is holding its breath to avoid the traumatic moments of the first hours of the advent of the pandemic.
