Burkina Faso: The “PURPA-BF” project receives €38.4 million in financing from the AfDB

The African Development Bank has allocated over 38 million euros to support Burkina Faso’s Urgent Project for Food Production Strengthening (PURPA), aimed at bolstering food security. PURPA-BF aims to enhance the production of key crops such as maize, rice, soybeans, cowpeas, sorghum, and wheat, contributing to the overall food security of the Burkinabe population.

In practical terms, the program will deliver approximately 9,000 tons of certified seeds for climate-adapted varieties and 36,000 tons of fertilizers to 330,000 farmers, with more than half being women, internally displaced persons, and youth.

The focus is on regions surrounding major irrigated plains in the country, including Bagrépôle, Bama, Banzon, and Karfiguéla.

The implementation of PURPA-BF is anticipated to result in a significant boost in national rice production by 430,000 tons and maize production by 707,000 tons. Other crops are also expected to experience increased production.

It’s worth noting that the African Development Bank has commended the relevance of PURPA, expressing its commitment to supporting its execution.

They highlighted that the Bank’s public financing portfolio in Burkina Faso is primarily directed towards the agriculture and environment sector, constituting 34% of the Bank’s total financial commitments in the country, amounting to over 110 billion CFA francs.
