Togo / The Togolese government steps up its fight against illicit products: A decisive step towards protecting public health

Togo throught its government has recently strengthened its measures to combat illicit commercial practices, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to the health and well-being of its citizens. The establishment of a technical committee within the Automated Marking Solution (SAM) implementation commission is a concrete testament to the determination of Togolese authorities to eliminate harmful products unsuitable for consumption.

Comprised of experts from the Togolese Revenue Office (OTR) and the Ministry of Commerce, this committee’s main mission is to provide crucial support to the commission in its fight against false declarations and unfair competition.

Under the leadership of Essowavana Adoyi, the commission’s president, this technical committee is seen as an essential element enabling the commission to fully carry out its mandate.

One of the key strategies adopted by the Togolese government is the mandatory application of secure marking since September 2020.

This initiative aims to enhance product security and authenticity, facilitate traceability, and identify their origin upon entry into the territory.

Rigorous control of imported items, including through inspection and verification of labels affixed to packaging, is essential to ensure compliance with quality standards and to protect consumers from potential hazards.
