Togo: Terrorism, Faure Gnassingbé reaffirms his sub-regional leadership in the search for solutions to the crisis

At the high-level summit on counterterrorism in Abuja, the President of Togo President Faure Gnassingbé , a trailblazer in the fight against terrorism, not only called for stronger regional cooperation but also denounced pre-colonial military agreements as «obsolete and irrelevant». This bold statement reflects his current stance on military cooperation with major powers in defense matters.

Could President Faure Gnassingbé’s outspoken position be seen as a message of support for the leaders of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), particularly the Nigerien authorities who recently terminated defense agreements with foreign powers?

By openly expressing his views, the Togolese President reaffirms his sub-regional leadership in seeking efficient solutions to the security crisis in the region.

As a seasoned mediator within ECOWAS, President Gnassingbé solidifies his role as a peace leader, demonstrated by his active diplomacy for the stability of the West African region.

However, President Faure Gnassingbé’s declaration has not gone unnoticed by some regional leaders, especially those perceived as close allies of France.

Reports suggest that his remarks sparked immediate reactions from some participants, even before the summit concluded.
