Togo: Reinforcing the fight against infectious diseases with new grants from the Global Fund

Togo has recently secured vital funding through the 7th funding cycle of the Global Fund (GC7) to combat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and COVID-19 (C19RM). In a workshop led by Prime Minister Mrs. Victoire Tomegah Dogbé on February 28th in Lomé, these grants, totaling 112.8 million euros (approximately 74 billion CFA francs), were officially unveiled.

This financial commitment from the Global Fund represents a significant boost for Togo, marking an increase of over 14% compared to the previous funding cycle (2021-2023).

Additionally, an extra 19.37 million euros (about 12.7 billion CFA francs) have been approved for the period 2024-2025.

Consequently, the overall grant allocation for 2024-2026 now stands at 86.7 billion CFA francs.

The GC7 and C19RM investment aims to bolster national initiatives against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and support Togo’s Central Purchasing of Essential and Generic Medicines (CAMEG-TOGO).

The dual objective is to build on the progress made in the fight against malaria and expedite the implementation of high-quality prevention and care services to counter the epidemics of HIV and tuberculosis.

During the launch workshop, the details of these new grants, along with associated conditions and recommendations, were extensively presented.

Implementation actors were introduced, and roles and responsibilities were clarified at all levels.

Furthermore, key issues, challenges, and obstacles to the effective utilization of Global Fund financing were identified.

The grant distribution is as follows: 29.4 billion CFA francs for HIV/AIDS, 2.58 billion CFA francs for tuberculosis, 42.04 billion CFA francs for malaria, and 12.7 billion CFA francs for C19RM.

These figures underscore Togo’s commitment to escalate its efforts against infectious diseases and fortify its healthcare system for the overall well-being of its population.
