Togo: HAAC issues formal notice to RFI for broadcasting false information

The Togo High Authority of Audiovisual and Communication (HAAC) recently issued a warning to the French radio channel RFI (Radio France Internationale) for “unfair treatment of information” and “dissemination of false information about Togo.”

This action, initiated on Monday, May 6, follows a series of reminders from the regulator emphasizing the importance of neutrality and fairness in covering Togolese news.

According to HAAC President Pitalounani Telou, the recent incidents include a segment aired on Sunday, May 5, incorrectly stating a formal ban on all protests against the Fifth Republic in the country, as well as coverage of the recent elections.

«These repeated inaccuracies in your reporting not only damage Togo’s image but also violate fundamental principles of journalism», emphasized the institution.

HAAC also warned that if such shortcomings persist, they might consider more severe measures, including suspending RFI’s broadcasting rights in the national territory.

A formal response has been requested from the French public media within fifteen days, highlighting the importance of journalistic responsibility and the accuracy of information in the international context.
