Senegal: Ousmane Sonko to tour AES countries soon. Towards closer ties with the Sahel bloc?

The newly elected authorities in Senegal, stemming from the presidential election on March 24, are keen on fostering cooperation with the bloc composed of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

During a meeting with officials from his political party, the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity (PASTEF), Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko announced an upcoming tour to the member countries of the Sahel States Alliance (AES) and Guinea Conakry.

It is evident that the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity (PASTEF), the ruling party in Senegal since April 2, 2024, intends to embrace its «Pan-Africanist and sovereigntist option by strengthening its political partnerships at the African and sub-regional levels». This was stated by the head of government, Ousmane Sonko.

According to the President of PASTEF, this tour is scheduled following invitations from partners of the party in the concerned countries.

Recall that the military authorities in the AES member countries warmly welcomed the election of Bassirou Faye Diamaye as the President of Senegal.

In a message posted on his X account, the Burkinabe Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, extended his heartfelt congratulations to the new Senegalese leader, expressing his support and best wishes for his term.

He also affirmed «his availability and commitment to work» with the new President to enhance bilateral relations between Burkina Faso and Senegal, while striving to renew sub-regional and international cooperation in the interest of both peoples.
