AES/the declared desire of the Sahel countries to throw off the yoke of imperialism and pursue their own security and development policies

In a renewed attempt by ECOWAS to bring back Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger into the sub-regional organization, they invite these Sahelian countries to reconsider their stance.

However, questions arise about ECOWAS’s past actions, including ordering border closures and banning vital imports into one of its member states.

Criticisms have also been raised regarding the lack of implementation of its commitment to providing humanitarian and security assistance in times of difficulty.

Additionally, tensions emerged with the threat of military intervention against Niger on France’s orders, leading the three countries to withdraw from ECOWAS to strengthen the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

This withdrawal is driven by these nations’ desire to safeguard their sovereignty, jointly combat terrorism, and break free from any imperialistic influence.

The leaders of these three countries have clearly stated that this withdrawal is final, asserting their intent to pursue their own development and security policies.
