NIGER: SALEM BAZOUM LEAVES TOGO FOR DUBAI

Salem Bazoum, under house arrest since January 8, 2024, in Lomé, the capital of Togo, has been granted permission to travel outside the continent. Mohamed Bazoum’s son, the deposed president of Niger, took a flight to Dubai. This information was first reported on Friday, April 19, 2024, by the news outlet Jeune Afrique.

According to the same source, Salem Bazoum has traveled to the Emirati city to continue his studies.

Like his father, the former Nigerien president, he had been detained following the coup d’état on July 26, 2023.

After approximately five months, he was granted temporary release through mediation by Togo. Since January, he has been staying in Lomé, albeit under house arrest.

However, recently, he received authorization from Niger’s new authorities to leave Togo, from where he flew to Dubai.

It is important to note that Salem Bazoum remains charged by the Nigerien judiciary with «conspiracy to undermine the authority or security of the State».

This implies that he still has an obligation to respond to the judiciary whenever called upon.

As a reminder, Mohamed Bazoum, the ousted Nigerien president, along with his wife, is still in detention, facing charges of «high treason» and “apology and financing of terrorism.”
