Mali: President Assimi Goïta reiterates his commitment to fighting corruption in all its forms

Corruption and illicit enrichment are consistent issues that plague many states, keeping them trapped in the shackles of poverty. No state can claim to develop without waging a battle against these scourges. The President of the Malian transition, Assimi Goïta, has recognized this and has taken comprehensive measures to fight against corruption in his country.

In a speech delivered on January 24, 2024, President Goïta expressed his desire that no one appears in a corruption case, whether close to him or not.

He also emphasized the need to combat petty corruption in offices. The president commended the judiciary for its efforts in the fight against corruption, highlighting that several individuals, including former ministers, have been convicted of corruption-related offenses.

Furthermore, Goïta addressed criticisms of the cybercrime law, denounced by human rights organizations.

He assured that this law aims to protect citizens from abuses, particularly defamation and insults.

Finally, the president revealed that government members have not received their full salaries for two years.

He explained that this measure was necessary to limit public spending and restore the country’s finances.

President Goïta’s statements indicate his commitment to making the fight against corruption a priority in the Malian transition.

It is hoped that other government members share the same vision to kickstart the country’s development.
