Kenya: Bomb explosion leaves 5 dead and 5 injured

Five people have died in a homemade bomb explosion on the border between Kenya and Somalia, according to a statement by Kenyan Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki. Five other people were also injured in this deadly incident in the Kenyan town of Elwak.

The bomb had been discreetly placed on a donkey-drawn cart to go unnoticed.

For the time being, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but several people are pointing the finger at militants from the Somali-based Al-Shabab terrorist group, affiliated to Al-Qaeda, because of their involvement in other attacks in the region.

This extremist group often carries out cross-border attacks, particularly in Mandera and Garissa.

Earlier this month, gunmen suspected of belonging to the terrorist group entered the El Wak hospital and injured guards when they asked where doctors were. No arrests were made.

The Minister went on to say that the security forces have cordoned off the area and are looking for those responsible for the attack, who have not been identified.

Although no one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, this region is often the scene of operations by the Al-Shabab terrorist group, which is particularly active along the Somali border.

The Kenyan government had previously considered reopening the border with Somalia last year, but the decision was postponed due to repeated attacks by Al-Shabab.

The terrorist group has threatened Kenyan forces during their years-long deployment to Somalia as part of multinational efforts to stabilise Somalia after more than three decades of conflict.
