Focus on the ECOWAS pre-electoral evaluation mission in Togo

In an official statement released on April 16, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) provided important clarifications regarding its mission in Togo. The statement made it clear that «the mission’s objective is to conduct a pre-electoral assessment in accordance with ECOWAS protocols and will not partake in any election process, contrary to a previous communication that has since been retracted».

Comprising seven members, the mission is primarily focused on evaluating the pre-electoral landscape in Togo in adherence to ECOWAS standards.

Led by Maman Sambo Sidikou, a seasoned diplomat with prior experience leading African Union missions in Mali and the Sahel, the team is in Togo from April 15 to 20.

Their task involves engaging with key stakeholders involved in the ongoing electoral preparations in the country.

The statement underlines the mission’s pivotal role in upholding democratic ideals and ensuring transparent and credible elections across the West African region.

ECOWAS remains steadfast in its commitment to actively monitor and supervise electoral processes to guarantee fairness and transparency.

The selection of Maman Sambo Sidikou to head this mission underscores his deep expertise in political affairs and his dedication to fostering stability and democracy in West Africa.

His nuanced understanding of regional dynamics, particularly in Mali and the Sahel, positions him well to steer the pre-electoral assessment in Togo effectively.

This mission assumes significance given the critical juncture as Togo gears up for significant elections.

Through constructive engagements with key stakeholders, ECOWAS aims to gather comprehensive insights and formulate recommendations to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and ensure a credible outcome.
