Togo’s political scene: Candidates engage in Charismatic campaigns for Upcoming legislative and regional elections

With legislative and regional elections set for Monday, April 29, Togo has officially commenced its election campaign starting from Saturday, April 13, covering the entire nation. This two-week campaign period is crucial for candidates and political parties to engage voters and showcase their respective visions for society.

The launch of the campaign follows a revised electoral timetable established during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, April 9, after the original date of April 20 was rescheduled.

Over 2,500 candidates are competing for seats in the National Assembly, while 284 candidate lists are contending for regional councilor positions.

These legislative and regional elections hold immense significance for Togo’s political landscape.

Notably, the regional elections mark a historic milestone, while the legislative polls are pivotal as Togo stands at the threshold of transitioning into a parliamentary system.

The outcome of these elections will play a decisive role in shaping the country’s governance.

Upon the promulgation of the new constitution, endorsed by the outgoing National Assembly, elected representatives will have the authority to appoint both the president and prime minister.

The elected president, vested with significant authority and tasked with representing Togo on the international stage, will hail from the party securing the majority in the legislative elections, whether from the ruling party or opposition.

This individual will be designated as the prime minister by deputies and senators, serving alongside the president for a six-year term.

The constitutional amendments proposed by the sixth legislature’s deputies on March 25 are currently under review by President Faure Gnassingbe after being returned for a second examination.

It’s important to note that the campaign period concludes on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at 11:59 PM.

Additionally, early voting is scheduled for April 26 for the armed forces, paramilitary units, and operational reserve forces.
