DRC: Appeal for $2.6 billion in aid for the humanitarian crisis

The United Nations and the Congolese government have jointly issued an urgent appeal to the international community to mobilize $2.6 billion (2.4 billion euros) to address the humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This escalating crisis is affecting 8.7 million Congolese, whose survival is heavily dependent on emergency aid.

In a joint statement released on Tuesday, February 20, Kinshasa and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) officially launched a 2024 Plan to gather the necessary resources.

The situation is particularly critical in the eastern part of the country, where residents around Goma find themselves caught between the Congolese army and the rebels of the March 23 Movement (M23).

Massive population displacements continue to worsen the crisis, with 6.7 million internally displaced persons documented.

In just the first weeks of the year, 170,000 people have fled different areas of the Masisi territory and the North Kivu capital.

These repeated displacements plunge families into extreme destitution, with precarious living conditions and urgent humanitarian assistance needs.

The war, reignited at the end of 2021 in a region already destabilized for decades, adds to several other major crises facing the DRC.

The United Nations and the Congolese government’s appeal for assistance aims to provide vital support to the millions of people affected by this humanitarian emergency.
