Côte D’Ivoire: Former president Laurent Gbagbo makes a new public appearance denying allegations of his death

In early February 2024, a persistent rumor regarding the death of former President Laurent Gbagbo circulated on social media. These baseless speculations quickly garnered strong reactions from his close associates, who promptly refuted the claims and reassured the public of the former leader’s well-being.

A recent public appearance involving Laurent Gbagbo not only refutes these unfounded rumors but also dismisses them as mere speculation lacking any foundation.

The septuagenarian, who became the subject of these death rumors, was confirmed to be in good health, putting an end to concerns sparked by his temporary absence from the media spotlight.

This recent public event featuring the former president was captured in a photograph dated February 26, 2024, where he is seen alongside the new president of the PDCI, Tidjane Thiam, who visited him at his residence.

Freezing this moment of encounter between the two political figures in time, the shared image provides a visual contradiction to the groundless rumors that had circulated earlier.

It’s important to highlight that Tidjane Thiam, former leader of Credit Suisse, assumed leadership of Ivory Coast’s main opposition party, the PDCI, a few months ago.

His resounding victory in the PDCI presidency, securing 96.5% of the votes against his opponent Jean-Marc Yacé, mayor of the commune of Cocody, comes as the 2025 presidential elections draw near.
