Burkina Faso: What can we learn from the interview of the President of the transitional government?

To mark the end of 1 year of transitional government, President Ibrahim Traoré addressed the nation in an interview on national television on 29 September.

A number of positive points emerged from the interview.

On the security front, Ibrahim Traoré reassured the nation that, thanks to the acquisition of military equipment and the strengthening of the workforce, the fight against terrorism had enabled the country to recapture more than 99% of its territory.

This has enabled many displaced people to return to their homes. On this point, the President reassured the audience that there is no longer any part of Burkina Faso where we can no longer set foot.

He therefore indicated that an enquiry had been opened into the Koumbri attack in order to establish who was responsible and to make possible improvements to the continuation of the fighting, which is why he considers the question of security to be a priority rather than that of the elections.

The President of the transition advocates fair justice for all.  Referring to the case of Paul Henri Damiba, Ibrahima Traoré announced that Damiba could return to the country at any time.

Ibrahim Traoré concluded by expressing his satisfaction at the commitment of the people of Burkina Faso to the Patriotic Support Fund (FSP), and the Agency for the Promotion of Community Entrepreneurship (APEC), which has enabled many things to be acquired.

Acknowledging the difficulty of a life of presidency, he asked for the support of the people and asked them to remain vigilant.
