Burkina Faso: Three French diplomats expelled for subversive activities

Tensions between France and Burkina Faso have flared up recently following the expulsion of three French diplomats, labeled “persona non grata” due to their alleged involvement in “subversive activities” according to Burkinabe authorities.

A note issued on Tuesday to the French embassy officially confirmed this decision, signaling a new phase in the already strained relations between the two nations.

Since Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumed power, Franco-Burkinabe relations have witnessed a noticeable deterioration.

Burkinabe authorities have consistently voiced their suspicion towards France, accusing it of meddling in the country’s internal affairs. The expulsion of the French diplomats seems to be a manifestation of this sovereignty-driven narrative.

The diplomats likely fell out of favor due to actions that were perceived as running counter to Burkinabe national interests.

This expulsion adds to a series of diplomatic spats between France and Burkina Faso. France, as a former colonial power in the region, continues to be viewed with skepticism regarding its involvement in Burkina Faso’s political and economic spheres.

This sometimes leads to friction with local authorities who are keen on safeguarding their sovereignty and independence.

The long-term repercussions of this expulsion on France-Burkina Faso relations remain uncertain at this point.
