Burkina Faso / Burkina Faso prioritises green energy and the environment under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré

Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s government in Burkina Faso has implemented significant measures to promote sustainable and environmentally-friendly development. On September12th, 2023, the Minister of Energy, Mines, and Quarries, Simon Pierre BOUSSIM, held a press conference in Ouagadougou to announce initiatives aimed at reducing dependence on fossil fuels and preserving the environment.

One of the flagship measures announced during this press conference is the decree on the conditions for the installation and operation of electric vehicle charging stations.

The Burkinabe government recognizes the crucial importance of promoting green energy to combat climate change.

these charging stations will be deployed in strategic locations such as public parking lots, service stations with sufficient space, and along the main roadways connecting the country’s cities.

Any natural or legal person, including local authorities, will be eligible for authorization to install these stations, thus promoting electric mobility throughout the country.

Regarding the new tariffs of the National Electricity Company of Burkina Faso (SONABEL), they aim to encourage heavy energy consumers to shift their energy demand from night to daytime.

This tariff restructuring moves the higher rates from daytime to the evening peak hours, while the lower rates from the evening are shifted to the daytime.

This measure is motivated by the need to optimize the importation of electrical energy, which is reduced in the evening due to increased demand in supplying countries such as Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.

Furthermore, since solar energy production is absent in the evening, this reorganization promotes more efficient use of cheaper electricity during the night.

Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s government demonstrates a clear commitment to environmental protection and the promotion of green energy.

The announced measures aim to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, encourage responsible electricity use, and generate revenue for the country.
