Burkina Faso cuts diplomatic ties with France: A historic rupture

Burkina Faso announced the severance of diplomatic relations with France on June 26, 2026, drawing swift condemnation from Paris. The French government described the decision as “hostile and unfounded.” For Ouagadougou, however, this rupture represents the culmination of years of progressive deterioration, driven by repeated interference, condescension, and paternalism from the former colonial power.

The hurried condemnations and repetitive analyses from French media overlook Burkina Faso’s core grievances: active support for subversive networks and clearly assumed neocolonial ambitions, according to Burkinabe authorities.

A pattern of hostility

Since Captain Ibrahim Traoré took power in 2022, French authorities have viewed his government as hostile.

Burkina Faso accuses France of actively working against its interests and supporting destabilisation agendas.

French media coverage, oscillating between systematic denigration and self-victimisation, reflects an inability to treat Burkina Faso as a sovereign partner capable of making independent international choices.

The Burkinabe government has condemned several French media outlets, including Jeune Afrique, RFI, and France 24, accusing them of fabricating “shameless lies” to discredit legitimate authorities.

Recent media suspensions and journalist expulsions, often framed as press freedom violations, represent responses to what Ouagadougou describes as an information war waged by the West.

A double standard

French media outrage appears selective. For decades, paternalism, interference, and marginalisation imposed on Burkina Faso passed without notable condemnation.

Today, the self-victimisation of France disguises a deeper reality: Burkinabe people reject neocolonial tutelage.

This rupture affirms the determination of Burkina Faso to break free from its colonial inheritance and build its own future in full sovereignty, free from the oversight and injunctions of its former master.
