Algeria: Torrential rains and snow in in some regions of the country

Algeria has experienced unstable weather in recent weeks. After a heatwave at the end of March, the weather slightly mellowed before deteriorating in the second half of May, with torrential rains and even snow in some regions of the country.

As spring enters its final stretch, rain is causing havoc throughout the northern part of the country. Last week, several provinces were affected by heavy rains that caused flooding. The provinces of Guelma, Tipaza, and Boumerdès were particularly devastated by the floods. Two children lost their lives in the first two provinces due to the bad weather, and significant material damage was recorded.

In the provinces of Djelfa and Sidi Bel Abbès, snow made an appearance just a few days before the beginning of summer.

The images circulating on social media are impressive. Normally, these two regions experience snowfall in winter, which is normal. But snow at the end of spring is rare and exceptional.

In a video published on Sunday by the Dz News channel on YouTube, one can see that snowfall was abundant in Djelfa to the point of disrupting road traffic.

In the municipality of Ras El Ma in the province of Sidi Bel Abbès, it is very hard to believe that the images of the snow-covered city were taken in the month of June.

Let’s recall that normally, the weather in Algeria in June is hot. The average temperatures are between 23°C and 28,5°C.  All this unseasonable rain and snow that the country is facing are evidence of the unstable weather.
