Togo engages in Humanitarian Operation for the Benefit of the Nigerien People

Togo, a small West African country known for its big heart and abundant resources, is once again coming to the aid of another nation. In a letter addressed to the President of the ECOWAS Commission by Professor Robert Dussey, the country will embark on a humanitarian assistance operation for the people of Niger.

According to available information, it was first the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator who submitted a request to ECOWAS to facilitate humanitarian assistance to the vulnerable populations in Niger, who have been facing increased difficulties since ECOWAS imposed sanctions following the coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

In turn, the ECOWAS Commission sought the approval of member countries of the organization to take action.

Togo, which is working towards a peaceful resolution of the political crisis in Niger, did not hesitate to give its consent.

«I have the honor to inform you that the Togolese government, having carefully examined the said request in light of the provisions of Article 44 of Additional Act A/SP 12/2/12 of February 17, 2012, has decided to respond favourably to it in the interest of the brotherly Nigerian people and our community», stated the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

«The competent authorities of Togo are willing to facilitate the work of United Nations humanitarian agencies providing vital assistance to vulnerable populations», Minister Dussey added in his letter.

Since the closure of borders following the ECOWAS embargo imposed in the aftermath of the coup, the people of Niger have been experiencing shortages of essential food items such as fresh peanuts, maize, millet, and more.

Humanitarian assistance from Togo would be a lifeline for the Nigerien people who are beginning to suffer from this embargo.
