Togo: FOPAT/Head of State Faure Gnassingbé determined to transform the agricultural sector, an important lever for the national economy

«Fostering Agricultural Advancement Together» stands as the central theme for the upcoming 2nd edition of the Agricultural Producers ‘Forum (FOPAT), set to unfold from March 11 to April 12 across Togo’s five economic regions.

FOPAT, a convergence of Togolese authorities and key players in the agricultural sector, illuminates the pivotal role of the industry in Togo’s economic development and underscores the government’s committed drive towards modernization for all stakeholders in the agricultural continuum.

In Togo, President Faure Gnassingbé has elevated the development of Togolese agriculture to a top priority.

Enshrining it within the framework of the National Development Program (PND), the Togolese administration has initiated a spectrum of measures to modernize this economically promising sector.

Initiatives such as the National programme for Agricultural Investment and Food Security (PNIASA), the Support Project for Agricultural Development in Togo, the incentivized mechanism for agricultural financing, and a myriad of others collectively underscore the multifaceted commitment to modernization by the government.

These endeavors are complemented by strategic approaches, including enhanced farmer access to financing, the adoption of agroforestry practices, intensified agricultural research, mechanization, fertilizer utilization, the fostering of agricultural value chains, and the emergence of agro-entrepreneurs.

Presently, the nation boasts a dedicated hub for agricultural technology and innovation, symbolizing a policy paradigm that seamlessly merges technology and innovation to uplift agriculture. This vision is geared towards enhancing agricultural productivity, ensuring food security, and bolstering nutritional well-being for the populace.

Through this renewed engagement with rural communities, the government aims to expedite the realization of various projects and programs geared towards the development of Togolese agriculture.

This sector not only contributes 20% to export revenues but also constitutes 40% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employs nearly 70% of the active population.

Under the firm leadership of Faure Gnassingbé, the aspiration for a modernized agriculture is becoming a tangible reality.
