Togo: Bishop Philippe Fanoko Kpodzro died on Tuesday aged 93

On Tuesday, January 9, 2024, Togo mourns the loss of Archbishop Philippe Fanoko Kpodzro, emeritus archbishop of Lomé, who passed away at the venerable age of 93 in his place of exile in Sweden. His departure marks the end of a life dedicated to faith and political engagement.

Born in Tomégbé in March 1930, Archbishop Kpodzro devoted four decades of his life to the Catholic Church, including sixteen years as the bishop of Atakpamé. In 2007, after fifteen years as the archbishop of Lomé, he retired.

His significant contribution to Togo’s political scene was evident during the Sovereign National Conference, where he played a crucial role, and as the president of the provisional National Assembly from 1991 to 1994.

The last decade of his life was characterized by his role as the leader of the opposition, embodying the Monseigneur Kpodzro coalition (DMK) during the 2020 presidential elections—a move aimed at promoting political alternation in Togo.

Although his efforts did not lead to the realization of his aspirations, Archbishop Philippe Fanoko  Kpodzro will be remembered as a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice and democracy.

Tributes have poured in since the announcement of his passing, bearing witness to the profound influence he wielded both in the religious and political realms within the Togolese nation.
