South Africa: President Ramaphosa received his Portugese counterpart

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was received in Pretoria on Tuesday by his counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa for his traditional official visit abroad in the week of National Day.

During a press conference, the South African president gave more information on the African mediation of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

«We met on Monday and we confirmed that we are now at a stage where we are going to go to Kiev and Moscow and our mission is a peace mission, and we want to call it a path to peace. The first thing we discussed with each other is that we want to listen to both sides, they have to give us their own point of view on the war and their minimum requirements to put an end to the conflict», explained Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa thanked President Ramaphosa for his role in the initiative, and stressed the importance of listening to both sides. He also spoke of the historic ties between his country and Mozambique, which is facing terrorist threats.

«This is a long-standing cooperation between Portugal and a sister country, Mozambique, and our commitment to do everything possible to ensure respect for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and security of the Mozambican state threatened by terrorist attacks in the north of Mozambique», stressed Marcelo Rebelo De Sousa, President of Portugal.

Each year, the Portuguese President chooses a different country to celebrate the bank holidays on 10 June with his community. Some 200,000 Portuguese and around 500,000 South Africans of Portuguese origin live in the country.
