Reviving the art of storytelling in Congo: Nurturing cultural heritage and creative expression

Across the vibrant landscapes of Congo, a dynamic group of creatives is breathing new life into the age-old tradition of storytelling, weaving tales that resonate in the streets, theaters, and homes alike.

At a central hub in Pointe-Noire, the bustling economic heart of the nation, storytellers are honing their craft through specialized training and access to essential resources.

One captivating evening, Nkombo, a gifted comedian, holds a rapt audience spellbound with his narrative prowess, highlighting the power of storytelling beyond mere words.

«I’ve chosen storytelling as a medium to explore our societal contributions. It’s not just about verbal storytelling; it’s about embodying the story, expressing emotions, and creating a rhythmic journey for the listeners», Nkombo articulates.

The establishment of this resource center marks a significant milestone, as it reinvigorates storytelling in a time when it was fading in many African communities.

Previous initiatives like “the Festival de l’oralité” and “Retour au mbongui” laid the foundation for this revival.

Jorus Mabiala, a driving force behind these efforts, emphasizes the need for a dedicated space for storytelling experimentation.

«We lacked a platform for innovation, so we established the Resource Center as a creative laboratory for oral traditions in Congo, building upon the legacy set by my father’s storytelling», Mabiala explains.

With International Storytelling Day approaching on March 20, themed «building bridges», a new generation of storytellers in Congo is passionately committed to preserving and evolving the rich African tradition of oral storytelling.

Ruth Moyabi, a student of storytelling mentored by Mabiala, reflects on the transformative impact of this art form.

«Storytelling is a journey of self-discovery, revealing our flaws, strengths, and aspirations. It serves as a wellspring of inspiration», Moyabi shares.

For Congo, International Storytelling Day serves as a catalyst for exploring avenues to share these captivating narratives beyond national borders, empowering storytellers to sustainably earn recognition and support for their invaluable contributions.

Furthermore, it presents an opportunity to bridge generational divides, fostering a culture where younger storytellers share narratives with elders, ensuring that these timeless stories endure for generations to come.
