Niger: The stakes for ECOWAS and the firm stance of the new authorities

The new authorities in Niger are taking a firm stance on the fate of the former president, Mohamed Bazoum, and warning of the potentially devastating consequences of an ECOWAS military intervention in the country.

In a recent statement, a ministerial authority stressed that ECOWAS military intervention in Niger would have serious repercussions, even going so far as to endanger the very existence of the regional organisation.

By stating that «Attacking Niger would be the end of ECOWAS», this authority made it clear that any attempt to overthrow the current military government in Niger could destabilise the region.

The CNSP is maintaining an uncompromising stance on the release or reinstatement of former president Mohamed Bazoum.

For the ruling military, it is unthinkable that the former leader should be released or reinstated as head of state.

This position reflects the firmness of the current government and warns against any attempt by ECOWAS to overthrow the current regime.

Niger is therefore at a critical point in its political history, with major issues at stake.

The firmness of the new Nigerien authorities underlines the importance of national stability and the preservation of the established order.

The issue of Niger and ECOWAS remains a major source of concern in the region, and the outcome of this situation will have significant consequences for the future of ECOWAS and West Africa as a whole.
