Niger: American diplomats visit Bakary Yaou Sangaré, a sign of Washington’s desire to disengage its troops?

The recent meeting between the Niger Foreign Minister Bakary Yaou Sangaré and the US delegation, led by Ambassador Kathleen Fitzgibbon in Niamey, follows significant protests in Agadez where hundreds of Nigeriens called for the removal of American troops.

The discussions with Minister Sangaré primarily revolved around the impending withdrawal of US forces from the country.

This raises the question: can we anticipate a prompt departure of the American military?

After Nigerien authorities terminated the military cooperation agreement with Washington, public expectations are high for the US to initiate the process of withdrawing its 1,100 troops from Niamey.

However, specifics regarding the withdrawal plan have not been disclosed by American officials.

The decision to terminate the agreement stemmed from various factors, including the perceived ineffectiveness of the US military presence, worsened security conditions during their stay, and Washington’s tendency to employ ultimatums in negotiations.

Given these circumstances, the role and impact of US troops in combating terrorism in Niger come into question.

Experts suggest their primary objective may have been regional influence rather than prioritizing the security interests of Nigeriens, thereby fueling demands for their prompt departure.
