Lucas Hernandez’s Euro 2024 dreams dashed by Knee injury

France defender Lucas Hernandez faces a major setback as he is set to miss Euro 2024 due to a knee injury sustained during Paris St-Germain’s Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund.

The 28-year-old’s hopes were dashed when he was forced off the pitch in the 42nd minute of PSG’s 1-0 loss to Dortmund, with subsequent MRI scans revealing a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee.

PSG confirmed that Hernandez will undergo surgery in the coming days, although no specific timeline for his recovery was provided.

ACL injuries typically require a recovery period of six to eight months, with some cases requiring even longer rehabilitation.

Hernandez, a key player who helped France win the 2018 World Cup, has represented Les Bleus 37 times.

His absence will be felt, especially after missing out on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar due to a similar ACL injury suffered during the group stage against Australia.

The European Championship in Germany, commencing on Friday, 14 June, will unfortunately be without Hernandez, leaving France to adjust their defensive plans for the tournament.
