Israel-Hamas war: The head of Israeli military intelligence resigned on Monday

Israeli Military Intelligence Chief Aharon Haliva has tendered his resignation, taking accountability for the failure to prevent the deadly attack launched by Hamas on October 7, as confirmed by the Israeli army on Monday, April 22. This marks a significant departure, being the first resignation of a senior Israeli political or military figure since the conflict’s inception.

In his resignation letter, General Haliva expressed remorse, stating, «On October 7, 2023, Hamas executed a lethal surprise assault against Israel (…) the intelligence service under my command did not fulfill its entrusted mission».

He further conveyed, «I have carried the weight of this dark day ever since, enduring its pain day after day, night after night. This burden of sorrow will forever be mine», before officially announcing his departure.

Following his coordination with the Chief of Staff, General Haliva requested the termination of his duties, with the army noting that he will retire once his successor assumes the role.

Haliva’s resignation comes after 38 years of dedicated military service, amid Israel’s pledge to deliver decisive blows to the Hamas movement in the imminent future.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized this strategy, stating, «We are intensifying both military and political pressure on Hamas as it remains the key to securing our hostages and achieving a definitive victory».

The ongoing Israeli operations in Gaza have tragically resulted in over 34,000 casualties, predominantly affecting women and children, according to reports from the Hamas Health Ministry.
