Former Barcelona Star Dani Alves faces Nine-Year Prison sentence for alleged sexual assault

The Barcelona Prosecutors’ Office is seeking a nine-year prison term for former Barcelona and Brazil defender Dani Alves on charges of alleged sexual assault.

Alves, who was taken into custody at the Mossos d’Esquadra de Les Corts police station in Barcelona on January 20, has remained in detention since then.

In addition to the nine-year prison sentence, the Prosecutors’ Office is demanding that Alves compensate the alleged victim with €150,000 (£130,500) and be prohibited from coming within one kilometre of the woman.

If convicted, Alves would also face a 10-year ban from any work involving minors, in accordance with Spanish law.

Spain’s new sexual consent law incorporates a range of offenses, from online abuse and groping to rape, each with varying potential penalties. Rape, for instance, could result in a maximum sentence of 15 years.

Dani Alves has been in pre-trial detention since January following an initial investigation by authorities.

Despite Alves offering to surrender his passports and wear a tracking device during the court’s decision period, all of his bail requests have been denied due to the court’s consideration of him as a flight risk.

This week, prosecutors once again opposed the latest request for Alves’ release made by his legal team.

Having secured 42 major honorsa, including three Champions League titles with Barcelona and two Copa Americas with Brazil, Alves is an accomplished footballer who participated in his third World Cup last year in Qatar.

As of now, there has been no immediate response from Alves’ legal team to requests for comments.
