FIFA Upholds three-year ban for Ex-Spanish Football chief Luis Rubiales over controversial Kiss

In a recent decision, FIFA has upheld the three-year ban imposed on Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation, following a controversial incident. The ban stems from Rubiales kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips after Spain’s Women’s World Cup final victory, with Hermoso filing a legal complaint, asserting that the kiss was non-consensual.

FIFA’s appeal committee, in its decision, stated that Rubiales’ actions were contrary to the principles outlined in Article 13 of the FIFA disciplinary code, which pertains to offensive behavior and violations of fair play.

This decision could potentially be challenged before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Adding to Rubiales’ challenges, a Spanish judge has recommended that he stand trial over the incident, describing the kiss as «not consensual and… a unilateral and surprising initiative».

Prosecutors had previously charged Rubiales with sexual assault and coercion.

Despite Rubiales maintaining that the kiss was a «consensual peck», the incident led to his resignation as the president of the Spanish football federation.

This event triggered global discussions on sexism within women’s sports, leading to the dismissal of World Cup-winning manager Jorge Vilda in September, who is also being investigated as part of the criminal case against Rubiales.

For Hermoso, whose image she claimed was tarnished by the incident, the journey has taken a turn.

After returning to the national side in October, she scored an 89th-minute winner against Italy.

The case continues to highlight broader issues of consent and respect within the realm of sports and football administration.
