Côte D’Ivoire: Inauguration of a cinema complex in Abidjan

The cinematic landscape  of Côte d’Ivoire has received a significant boost with the inauguration of a new multiplex cinema by the French group “Cinéma Pathé.” The grand opening took place on April 23, 2024, at the Cap Sud shopping center in Abidjan-Marcory, marked by a joint press conference led by President Aurélien Bosc, Frédéric Godfroid, Director of Operations for Africa, and Sylvain Agbré, Director of Pathé Abidjan Cinema.

This state-of-the-art cinema complex boasts six screens, including two VIP theaters, accommodating a total capacity of approximately 1,000 seats.

Among its offerings is a mobile app for remote ticket purchase and online reservations.

Through this innovative cinematic venture, the Pathé Group aims to revolutionize the film industry in Ivory Coast by promoting local Ivorian films alongside international releases.

President Aurélien Bosc highlighted the extensive seven-year effort and investment, with the complex’s towering structure standing at 45 meters and costing over 30 million euros, equivalent to more than 19 billion CFA francs.

Equipped with laser projectors, the screens deliver immersive 3D experiences. Frédéric Godfroid emphasized the goal of evoking emotions and reigniting the love for cinema among Ivorians.

Despite Abidjan once boasting around forty cinemas, only a few remain operational today.

Pathé’s vision is to create a cinema accessible to a broader audience, offering competitive pricing ranging from 3,500 to 6,000 CFA francs.

Sylvain Agbré, the local subsidiary’s operations director, announced a diverse film lineup scheduled for April 26, 2024, featuring Ivorian and African films, international blockbusters, and cultural performances.

The largest theater boasts an 18-meter-wide screen, promising an immersive viewing experience.

This cinematic gem is nestled within the Cap Sud shopping center, a partnership venture with Prosuma, the center’s management entity. The complex is staffed by a team of 50 local agents.

In 2023, Ivorian films garnered 100,000 cinema admissions nationwide, with “Le gendarme d’Abobo” starring actor Michel Gohou accounting for 25,000 admissions alone.

Pathé aims to double or triple this trend, supporting local producers and enhancing the cinematic landscape in Ivory Coast.
