Burkina Faso: What you need to know about President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s visit to Ouagadougou

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye concluded an official visit to Ouagadougou on Thursday evening, where he met with Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Tare. This visit is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance regional cooperation between the two nations.

During his stay, President Faye held a private meeting with Captain Traoré at the Koulouba Palace.

Their discussions focused on various shared interests, particularly the dynamics between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), the latter having recently announced its withdrawal from the sub-regional institution.

President Faye emphasized his commitment to maintaining and enhancing communication channels between ECOWAS and AES member states.

He stressed the importance of keeping dialogue open, even in challenging circumstances.

“We must not close the windows and draw the curtains; we need to keep spaces open (…) to argue if necessary, but to clear the air,” he stated.

This statement highlights President Faye’s dedication to finding “common ground” between the two regional blocs, aiming to resolve tensions and foster cooperation.

The visit of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to Ouagadougou marks a significant step in strengthening Senegal-Burkina Faso relations.
