Burkina Faso: Transition President Ibrahim Traoré meets the President of the High Council of the Judiciary

The President of the  High Council of the Judiciary was received in audience this Thursday, December 21, by the President of the Transition, Head of State, Captain Ibrahim TRAORE, the guardian of the independence of the judiciary, as part of the statutory meeting for 2023.

«In the first instance, we assessed the overall performance of the country’s judicial system for the past year, 2022. It was an evaluation to identify sources of satisfaction, shortcomings, and challenges that lie ahead», stated President Mazobé Jean KONDE after the meeting.

The President of the High Council of the Judiciary, Mazobé Jean KONDE, specified that this meeting is in accordance with a constitutional requirement.

According to this provision, the Head of State, as the guarantor of the independence of the judiciary, meets annually in November with the High Council of the Judiciary to discuss matters related to strengthening judicial independence. This meeting was rescheduled due to scheduling constraints.

Among other topics, issues of financial and economic delinquency and the recovery of illicit assets were also addressed during this statutory meeting between the President of the Transition and the members of the HJC.

«We tried to contribute to the discussion on this issue. Financial and economic delinquency often provides a breeding ground for other criminal activities, notably terrorism», President KONDE emphasized.

Captain Ibrahim TRAORE paid close attention to the concerns raised by the members of the HJC and provided responses to the questions posed during the meeting.
