Burkina Faso: The African Union is assessing the country’s situation concerning security, humanitarian issues, and development. What approach could be taken to find a solution?

A delegation from the Peace and Security Council of the African Union has been in Ouagadougou since last weekend. On Monday, July 25, they met with the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, President of the Burkinabe Revolution, and held a working session with several other members of the government, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E Olivia Rouamba. According to the Minister, the delegation’s purpose was to evaluate the situation related to the security and humanitarian crisis in Burkina Faso.

«We tried to explain the objectives of our mission, which he understood well. During our discussions, he willingly contributed by explaining the prevailing security situation in the country and his government’s priorities», said Ambassador Mohamed Lamine THIAW, the current President of the Peace and Security Council and the permanent representative of Senegal to the African Union.

Indeed, all the issues that are at the heart of the concerns of the Burkinabe people were addressed during the exchanges between the delegation from the Peace and Security Council of the African Union and the Head of State.

Through this delegation, Captain Ibrahim Traoré presented to the African Union the security situation in Burkina Faso and the priorities of his government for the restoration of peace and security in the country.

According to the President of the delegation, the exchanges with President Ibrahim Traoré were quite fruitful, and a consensus was reached between them.

Furthermore, during the working session with members of the government, the Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the presence of this delegation from the Peace and Security Council of the African Union on Burkinabe soil also aimed to collectively consider appropriate solutions for an exit from the crisis.

She stated: «Burkina Faso has been suspended from all African Union bodies since the change in constitutional order. There have been several negotiations to reintegrate Burkina, but the fundamental texts of the Union made it difficult to come to the negotiating table. Therefore, the presence of such a delegation holds promising prospects».
