Burkina-Faso: President Ibrahim Traoré receives the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

During his visit to Burkina Faso since Wednesday, March 20th, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, engaged in a meeting with President Ibrahim Traoré on Thursday. This marks the first visit of the UN’s top official to the “Land of Honest Men.” Following the meeting, Türk expressed his commitment to enhancing the partnership between his institution and Burkina Faso.

At the onset of their discussions, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights extended solidarity to the resilient Burkinabe people amidst a highly complex security situation.

According to Burkina Faso’s Presidency,  Vollker Türk emphasized the necessity of addressing human rights issues comprehensively, despite the security crisis significantly affecting the country’s development.

«Human rights encompass socio-economic and development rights, intricately intertwined with security concerns», underscored the senior UN official.

Upon arriving in Ouagadougou on Wednesday, Volker Türk engaged in fruitful discussions with various government officials, including the Ministers of Human Rights and Defense.

He also conducted meetings with representatives from civil society, UN agencies, and members of the diplomatic community.

Mr. Türk’s visit to Burkina Faso occurs nearly three years after his predecessor, Michelle Bachelet from Chile, visited in November 2021.

This visit underscores the ongoing commitment of the United Nations to supporting human rights and development efforts in Burkina Faso.
