Burkina Faso/Niger: Faced with the test of change, the bishops call for calm in the face of the blessing of homosexual couples, while the faithful are keen to preserve cultural and moral values

In response to Pope Francis’s document «Fiducia Supplicans», which offers the possibility of blessing couples in irregular situations and same-sex couples, bishops from Burkina Faso and Niger issued a statement on Wednesday, December 20.

In their note, the bishops urge the faithful to remain calm and steadfast in their faith, emphasizing that the Catholic doctrine on marriage remains unchanged.

The Church does not recognize unions that are irregular or between individuals of the same sex.

«Dear sons and daughters of the Church, the Family of God in Burkina Faso and Niger, we do not want to leave you in embarrassment, misunderstanding, and worry», declare the bishops.

They also announce that a detailed statement will be issued later to delve into all pastoral questions raised by the implementation of the document.

In the meantime, priests are encouraged to continue their ministry serenely, and the faithful are invited to remain in the peace that Christ Jesus brings to the world, especially in this period when the lights of his birth are already shining on our earth.

It is crucial to note, however, that Catholic Christians in Burkina Faso and Niger express their deep attachment to the cultural and moral values that guide their communities.

For these people, marriage, union, and the concept of a couple are deeply rooted in secular traditions.

They believe that these values are essential for preserving their cultural identity and customs.

From their perspective, accepting the doctrine of blessing same-sex couples goes against their profound beliefs, as marriage and union are inherently defined as being between a man and a woman.

This perspective reflects their commitment to cultural and moral principles deeply embedded in the history of their respective societies.
