Burkina Faso: Government suspends cereal exports to ensure National Food Security

The Burkinabe government, led by the visionary President Ibrahim Traoré, has taken a significant step to ensure the country’s food security. In a statement dated December 19, 2023, ministers responsible for trade, agriculture, territorial administration, and the economy announced the suspension of cereal exports throughout the national territory, effective Tuesday, December 19, 2023.

Indeed, the Burkinabe government, actively engaged in substantial efforts to support agricultural production, aims to guarantee the availability and accessibility of cereals to the entire population.

The statement specifies that «the export of cereals is prohibited throughout the national territory from the date of signing of this statement until further notice».

The government statement emphasizes that cereal exports are now subject to a Special Export Authorization (SEA), in accordance with the provisions of decree no. 2021-1235/PRES/PM/MINEFID/MICA of November 29, 2021.

Consequently, the issuance of Special Export Authorizations (SEA) for cereals is suspended until further notice.

The government has warned that any violator of this measure will be sanctioned in accordance with the existing regulations.

This decision aims to strengthen Burkina Faso’s food security by preserving cereals to meet national priority needs, particularly in a context where many countries face food challenges related to various factors, including climatic conditions.
