Burkina Faso/Counter-terrorism: The operational capabilities of the fighting forces are being further strengthened

Under the leadership President Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso is intensifying its efforts to combat persistent terrorist groups, making significant strides in both military capabilities and training.

In addition to acquiring sophisticated military equipment, the country is enhancing the skills of its combat units.

A notable advancement is the creation of an Advanced Tactical Air Controllers (GATA) unit, which marks a significant milestone in Burkina Faso’s counter-terrorism strategy.

On June 7, 2024, the first class of GATA operatives graduated after completing a rigorous three-month training program.

These soldiers, selected from various combat units, are now equipped to provide more effective air support to ground forces during operations.

The primary responsibilities of the GATA operatives include communicating with pilots, guiding aircraft to their targets, utilizing data from flight crews, and securing landing zones.

They will also ensure the safe landing of helicopters and coordinate the delivery of supplies and equipment to armed forces.

With 35 trained operatives ready for deployment, Air Force officials highlight the critical operational importance of the GATA.

Mastery of targeting, designation, and engagement techniques will significantly enhance operational efficiency in the fight against terrorism.

This initiative demonstrates Burkina Faso’s commitment to improving its military effectiveness and achieving greater success in its ongoing battle against terrorism.
