Burkina Faso: Almost 192,000 IDPs return home

The reconquest of the territory of Burkina Faso is underway, enabling internally displaced persons (IDPs) to gradually return home.  As of 31 August 2023, 191,937 internally displaced persons (IDPs) had returned to their respective localities in various regions, as announced by the government at the Council of Ministers meeting on 20 September.

In order to encourage the return of other IDPs, the government has put in place a number of actions in addition to those already underway.

Future actions include the continued consolidation of pacified areas, the return of the administration, the continuation of awareness-raising campaigns aimed at IDPs and the local population, the systematic resupply of localities, and the return of drinking water.

Emphasis will also be placed on the rehabilitation of socio-educational, water, health and road infrastructures, in line with the national strategy.

The return of these IDPs bears witness to the war on terrorism being waged by the President of the Transition and his government.

Ibrahim Traoré, who came to power in September 2022, has made this war one of his mantras.

Thanks to the FDS and the VDP, the territories formerly occupied by the terrorists are being recovered.

With the increase in the number of fighters due to the recruitment of Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland and the acquisition of sophisticated war materiel, the terrorists now only have their tails between their legs.

It should be remembered that on December 31st, 2021, Burkina Faso had 1,579,976 IDPs as a result of terrorism.

Ibrahim Traoré will soon have been in power for a year, but a number of achievements and advances have already been made.
