A closer look at Group A: AFCON 2023 teams and expectations

The 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is set to take place in Côte d’Ivoire from January 13 to February 11, 2024. The draw for the group stage was held on October 12, and Group A includes the host country Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau.

Côte d’Ivoire, having hosted the competition in 1984, is considered one of the favorites for victory, boasting a mix of experienced players like Franck Kessié and young talents such as Simon Adingra and Evan Ndicka. The team aims to replicate its success from 2015.

Nigeria, a three-time winner (1980, 1994, and 2013), is eager to reclaim its status as a football powerhouse.

With a strong offensive lineup featuring Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Ihenacho, the Super Eagles are determined to make a significant impact.

Equatorial Guinea, after an impressive qualifying campaign, looks to disrupt the established order in Group A.

Led by captain Emilio Nsue, the team aims to build on its past successes, including a notable victory against Tunisia in June 2023.

Guinea-Bissau, ranked 106th by FIFA, may be the underdog in Group A but shouldn’t be underestimated. Making their fourth consecutive appearance in the AFCON, the Djurtus, led by Olympique Lyonnais’ Mama Baldé, seek to achieve better results than in previous editions.

The group promises to be competitive, with each team bringing its strengths and aspirations to the tournament.
