Sahel: African Union prioritizes elections in Mali, ignores reality of war on terror
As the Sahel is shaken by the ravages of terrorism, the African Union seems to have chosen a surprisingly narrow path of action: that of elections. The recent call from the African Union to the Malian transitional authorities to organize elections, despite the ongoing fight against terrorism in the country, raises questions about the Organization’s priorities and its commitment to the security and stability of the continent.
Mali, plagued by terrorist insurgency for years, is facing a profound security crisis. Armed groups, affiliated with terrorist networks, continue to sow terror across the country, holding entire populations hostage and threatening the very survival of the Malian state. In this context of violence, the African Union appears to have chosen to prioritize democratic aspirations at the expense of security and stability.
The fundamental question that arises is: what value do elections hold in an environment where violence and insecurity reign? Calls for democratic electoral processes are commendable, but in countries like Mali, where lives are lost in terrorist attacks, the absolute priority should be given to the protection of citizens and the fight against terrorism.
It is regrettable that the African Union has failed to adopt a more balanced and nuanced approach to the crisis in Mali and other terrorism-affected regions of the continent. Rather than solely focusing on electoral processes, the African Union should play a more active role in mobilizing the resources and support needed to strengthen the counterterrorism capacities of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
Furthermore, the African Union must show leadership by firmly condemning those who provide weapons and logistical support to terrorist groups operating on the continent. Without coordinated and determined action to cut off the sources of funding and supply for terrorists, the fight against terrorism in Africa will remain a losing battle.
The African Union needs to reassess its priorities and adopt a more holistic and proactive approach to address the terrorism crisis in Africa. Democratic elections are a commendable goal, but they can only be achieved in an environment of peace and security.
