Burkina Faso/Côte d’Ivoire: The likely beginning of solid cooperation against terrorism and transboundary illicit trafficking
The historical relations between Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire, which were strained a few months ago due to differences in security and political matters, are on the verge of entering a new era. The exchange meeting between the military authorities of both countries could be the starting point for this new phase of relations.
Indeed, at the request of the Ivorian party, the Burkinabe Minister of State, who is responsible for defense, agreed to meet and held discussions on Friday, April 19, 2024, in Niangologo, Burkina Faso, with his Ivorian counterpart, who led a delegation. The two parties exchanged views on matters of common interest, particularly focusing on security issues.
It was an opportunity for these military authorities from Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire to discuss and clarify the misunderstandings that have undermined their bilateral relations in recent months. For them, dialogue remains the only means to create solidarity and fraternity, ensuring peace and stability.
There is a need for strengthening cooperation to combat insecurity within the shared space of the two countries. According to their statements following the discussions, both parties remain confident and optimistic about the positive impact of this meeting on the relations between the two West African countries.
As a reminder, Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire are brotherly, neighboring, and longstanding friendly nations, sharing a common border that stretches for 584 km according to available information. This border is prone to illicit trafficking and has become a haven for terrorist groups. A frank and solid military cooperation will enable both countries to rid themselves of their common enemy, terrorism.
